San Marco Hotel is placed in the premises
of the former Hospitale di S.Maria della Caritą,
a 12th century structure established by
three fellow citizens and managed by laymen.
This structure, which got the benefit of Pope Boniface VIII's blessing and inspired the painter Ottaviano Nelli, who painted Cristo crocefisso e lavergene Marya et sancto Giovanne et tre Angeli (1431) within its premises, was used to charitably
give shelter to the poor, invalids and pilgrims.
